Today, is R U OK? day.

A day set aside for Australians to ask their friends, family and workmates; Are you okay?

Do you need to talk to someone?

Or the classic Aussie favourite; Would you like a cuppa?

Millions of people around the world suffer depression, and a great majority of those will not be able to cope and will take their own life.

It is one of the most common and distressing afflictions facing mankind today.

“The spirit of a man will sustain him in sickness,
But who can bear a broken spirit?”  Proverbs 18:14

The word depression isn't found in the Bible. But there are numerous occurences of people suffering from depression, so contrary to popular belief, it isn't an affliction for this century.

Some of those examples are found here;

Abraham in Genesis 15

Jonah in Jonah 4

Job in Job

Elijah in 1 Kings 19

Jeremiah in Jeremiah

And, throughout the Psalms, David speaks of depression.

Some of those verses are found in Psalm 6, 13, 18, 94-95, 116, 141-143 and 146-147. This is by no means a complete list of David's pleas.

If these men of God were susceptible to depression, it stands to reason that we can be too.

“Why are you cast down, O my soul?
And why are you disquieted within me?
Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him
For the help of His countenance. …
For You are the God of my strength…”
Psalm 42:5. 43:2

So, today, I encourage you to seek out the person standing next to you, or the stranger on the bus, or perhaps even that odd-one-out that no one seems to like...and ask...

R U Okay?
